Trauma doesn’t always look like what people expect. It’s not always flashbacks or nightmares, though those are real too. Sometimes it’s quieter than that.
- You stay hypervigilant, alert to things others don’t seem to notice, always waiting for something to go wrong
- Certain sounds, places, or situations pull you back into a feeling you can’t fully explain
- You’ve gone numb. Not sad, not angry. Just flat. Disconnected from things that used to matter.

What We Treat
Types of Trauma We Work With
Trauma takes many forms. At MK Counseling, we work with adults carrying a wide range of traumatic experiences including:
- Childhood trauma: emotional, physical, or sexual abuse experienced in early life
- Sexual assault and abuse: at any age, recent or historical
- Physical and emotional abuse: in relationships, families, or institutions
- Complex PTSD: repeated or prolonged trauma, often from childhood
- Veteran and combat trauma: military service and the experiences that come with it
- Accident and injury trauma: car accidents, medical trauma, near-death experiences
- Natural disaster trauma: events that threatened your physical safety
- Complex grief: loss that hasn't resolved, or grief that's become stuck and layered
- Attachment trauma: early relational wounds that affect how you connect with others today

How We Work With Trauma
Our Approach to Trauma Therapy
Trauma therapy at MK Counseling is led by Mandy Kushner, LPC-S, one of the few ART-trained therapists in the Pittsburgh area.
Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART)
ART is the primary modality Mandy uses with trauma clients. Unlike traditional talk therapy, ART doesn't require you to verbally revisit the traumatic event in detail. Using guided eye movements and imagery, ART helps your brain reprocess painful memories at a neurological level while you stay in control throughout. Many clients notice meaningful change within 2 to 5 sessions. If you've tried trauma therapy before and felt stuck, ART may be the difference.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
CBT helps identify and shift the thought patterns that trauma leaves behind, the core beliefs about yourself, others, and the world that formed in response to what happened. Beliefs like "I'm not safe", "I can't trust anyone", or "It was my fault."
Polyvagal Theory
Mandy draws from Polyvagal Theory to help clients understand their nervous system's response to threat and build the capacity for genuine safety and connection. Trauma is stored in the body. This work acknowledges that.

You don’t have to have it figured out before you reach out. Here’s what the process looks like from the beginning.
From there
sessions are built around what you're ready to work on. Nothing is forced. Nothing is rushed. If ART is a good fit, Mandy will explain how it works before you begin, so there are no surprises.
Most trauma clients
working with ART begin to notice real shifts within 2 to 5 sessions. Some take longer. The goal is never speed for its own sake. It's meaningful, lasting change at a pace that works for you. Sessions are 50 minutes via telehealth across Pennsylvania.
Your first session
is about getting to know each other. Mandy will ask about what brought you in, what you're hoping for, and what has or hasn't worked in the past. You set the pace for how much you share, and when. From there, sessions are built around what you're ready to work on.

Working With a Trauma Specialist
Mandy Kushner is a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor with over 22 years of clinical experience and specialized training in trauma-focused care. She’s one of the few ART-trained therapists practicing in the Pittsburgh area, and she holds certifications as a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional (CCTP) and CBT-Certified clinician.
She works exclusively via telehealth, which means you can access trauma therapy from wherever you feel safest, anywhere in Pennsylvania.
